11 spectators injured in Dakar prologue accident
By: Jamie Klein, News Editor; Additional reporting by Elisabetta Caracciolo
Eleven spectators were injured in the accident that brought Saturday’s Dakar Rally prologue stage to a halt, with a child and his father in serious condition.
The accident occurred just over halfway through the 11km stage as Guo Meiling lost control of her X-Raid Mini after a jump, veering off course and hitting a group of spectators.
Organisers immediately neutralised the stage to allow emergency services to attend the scene of the incident, with six adults and five children rescued by medical teams.
Two were reported to be seriously injured, with a 14-year-old boy suffering pulmonary trauma and his father suffering massive head trauma.
Both were airlifted to the Santa Francesca Romana hospital, and were reported by doctors as stable.
Chinese driver Guo, who was making her Dakar debut at 47 years of age, will take no further part in the rally.
The Dakar continues on Sunday with the first stage proper, taking competitors 258km from Rosario to Villa Carlos Paz.
