Loeb: Victory bid over after "frustrating" crash
By: Valentin Khorounzhiy, Editorial Assistant
Peugeot's Sebastien Loeb has conceded he is out of contention for victory in the 2016 Dakar Rally after rolling his car in Monday's stage.
Dakar debutant Loeb led much of the first week of the event, but lost a lot of ground on the dunes of Stage 8.
Having briefly gotten stuck in the sand midway through, he then suffered a rollover in the closing stages, his Peugeot 2008DKR16 sustaining major damage.
The Frenchman did manage to continue on, but ended up completing the day in eighth place overall, an hour behind new leader Stephane Peterhansel.
"What happened was there was a dip and I didn't see it," Loeb said upon finishing the stage. "We arrived on [the dip], fell in and it threw the car off balance - and we rolled.
"We broke a lot of things on the car. We had to change two wheels and change the transmission so, for sure, we lost a lot of time."
With the lost time and the damage sustained by the car, the Frenchman reckons he will no longer be a factor in the fight for the top spot - but will continue pushing in order to get more mileage.
"It's finished for overall victory," he conceded. "I still have to take the experience. We came here to get experience first and foremost.
"It was only 10 kilometres from the end of the stage. It's a bit frustrating, but that's life, so we have to continue now."
