Following a 25 year absence, the company will return to Dakar with a brand-new car called the 2008 DKR. Little is known about the model but it will be driven by Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres who was previously won the rally five times on a motorcycle.
According to Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat, the company decided to return to Dakar following their win at the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. As he explained, "That was a very special moment which showcased what Peugeot Sport is capable of achieving in association with Total and Red Bull. It was a win that gave us wings and led us to take a close look at what other motorsport programs we could do together."
The executive went on to say "Our intention is to have everything in place for next year’s Dakar, even though our strategy is based on a longer term than was the case for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, since we will be involved for several years. We are perfectly aware that the Dakar is a very difficult event but our aim is nonetheless to win at first attempt in 2015.”
