Toyota, Honda and Nissan recall more than two million vehicles for faulty airbags
Toyota, Honda and Nissan have announced a major recall after discovering an identical issue with the passenger airbag.
The three Japanese automakers have issued a recall totaling more than two million cars after detecting an identical passenger airbag problem which could result in a bursting inflator that could send plastic pieces flying in the cabin. The identified airbags were manufactured by Japan-based Takata Corp. and could affect up to three million cars including models from carmakers outside Japan.
Toyota has issued a recall for 1.7 million cars (including 320,000 in Japan, 490,000 in Europe and 580,000 in North America) affecting models like the Corolla, Tundra and the Lexus SC. All of these cars were manufactured between November 2000 and March 2004.
Honda is recalling 1.1 million vehicles (270,000 in Japan, 64,000 in Europe and 680,000 in North America) related to Civic, CR-V and Odyssey models.
Nissan will have to check 480,000 cars globally (137,000 from Japan). Affected models include the X-Trail, Cube, Teana units made between August 2000 and January 2004.
Mazda has also issued a 45,000-vehicle recall (4,000 in Japan) for the RX-8 and Mazda6.
The cause of the defect has been traced to two human errors during the production phase. One worker did not activate a system for eliminating defective parts and products, while some of the items were improperly stored as these were exposed to humidity, based on a statement made by Honda's spokeswoman Akemi Ando. |
