Honda Civic set for early facelift in 2012
Honda is rushing along with the facelift for the new Honda Civic with new updated model set to be launched before the end of 2012. Facelifts are usually saved until at least 3 years into a models life cycle but poor quality and handling has forced their hand.
It is considered that Honda took a cost cutting direction with the new generation Civic, a decision that has wildly backfired upon them. American Honda President Tetsuo Iwamura has confirmed the model will be updated to improve its handling, however there are no confirmation as to whether the styling will receive a more enticing upgrade as well.
"The previous Civic, which came out in 2005, was known for its sporty driving, high-quality interiors, lack of noise and excellent braking," says David Champion, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports. "The new one seems to have fallen apart in those areas."
The Civic resides in the competitive small car market that includes the Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla. The sales figures from May to November has left Honda's Civic languishing in 4th place behind their Chevy, Ford and Hyundai rivals. Although part of this decline was due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan back in March.
