McLaren confirms P1 lapped the 'Ring with an average speed of more than 111 mph, pics releasedMcLaren has provided more details about the P1's sub-seven minute lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Yesterday McLaren released footage with the P1 tackling the 'Ring and now they have disclosed additional info with the run. The supercar managed to complete the 20.8 km (12.9 mile) lap with an average speed of more than 178 km/h (111 mph). The figure isn't too revealing as if we take an average speed of 178 km/h over a 20.8 km course it results a 7m 0s run.
What we are interested to find out is the exact average speed. If it was 179 km/h, it means the P1 completed the lap in 6 minutes and 58 seconds, which would make it slower than the Porsche 918 Spyder (6m 57s). If the P1's average speed was 180 km/h, it results a 'Ring time of 6 minutes and 56 seconds.
McLaren used a P1 codenamed XP2R wearing a Supernova Silver paint with the Race mode turned on which extended the active rear wing by 300mm. In addition, the ride height was lowered by 50mm while the RaceActive Chassis Control suspension system was stiffened by 300 percent.
With McLaren chief test driver Chris Goodwin behind the wheel, the P1 managed to hit the electronically-capped top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h) on the Döttinger Höhe straight. Throughout the course the driver made on average a gear change every six seconds and used DRS seven times (nine percent of the entire lap).
